Depression in Children

Depression in children is often expressed in behavioral problems at school and at home, Since children rarely are able to express their feelings, they act them out. Other symptoms include insomnia, fatigue, headache, apathy, social withdrawal and weight loss. Separation anxiety and phobias are often related to a child?s depression. Dysfunction in the family can contribute to a child?s depression. Certainly, a child that is acting out will result in a family that is feeling dysfunctional.

Proper assessment, therapy, and occasionally medication are indicated when a child is depressed. Counselors with specialized training and skills can help children communicate their feelings and deal with them.
